Types of Fences

fence image

Fences can be a wonderful addition to your landscape; they can add beauty and privacy, making them one of the most functional additions to your yard or garden area. There are quite a few fence materials on the market today. There are hundreds of ways to design a fence from the material to the color, size and style (there are scalloped edges, Gothic edges, lattice, basket weave, panels and more). The choices are great and endless! You can read about some of the most common fencing types below. Make sure you find a professional and reliable fence installer to ensure that your new fence is installed properly.

Some Important Considerations

  • Find out where your property line is before installing your fence. Any reliable fence installer will make sure of this but if you will be installing the fence on your own then make sure you get accurate information as to where exactly your property line is.
  • It is equally as important to clarify your local zoning regulations before getting started. The last thing you want is a fine, ticket or order to remove your newly installed fence.
  • Check with your local gas and electric company to make sure you won't hit any underground utilities.
  • What is your budget? This will help you narrow down the types of fence to best suit your needs.
  • Is your new fence going to be part of larger landscaping design project? If so, then make sure you consult with a landscaping design expert to know if the fence will complement the landscape design theme.

Fence Types

Wood Panel Fencing

Wood panel fencing is a popular fence type for several reasons, including its ability to provide the most privacy. Plus, there are many types of stain available to complement your home and garden.

Post and Rail Fencing

Post and rail fencing resembles the kind of fencing you would imagine on a farm or around the yard of a country home. These fences don't create privacy, but they are good for dividing property lines.

Vinyl Fencing

As with vinyl products like siding and gutters, with vinyl fencing there is almost no maintenance required — which makes this fence type a very popular choice. There is also no rotting or fading.

Polymer Fencing

Polymer fencing looks like wrought iron but has low maintenance, unlike real iron.

Chain Link

This is the fence type that is the most economical and functional. It can keep pests out and the children in and it also easily divides property lines. Many chain link fences now come with a weather resistant vinyl coating (usually colored green or brown).
